Nicholas Harding at S.H. Ervin Gallery

Nicholas Harding’s Wilpena Pound and Eucalyptus (Sliding Rock), 2019–20, is included in Tree of Life: A Testament to Endurance, at S.H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney until 31 May 2021.

In his exhibition review in The Sydney Morning Herald, art critic John McDonald describes Harding's painting as the best by the artist he has seen in years: 'The colour is crisp – the palette knife has been used with the precision of a surgeon wielding a scalpel. This vast canvas is filled with light, the composition held together by the most intricate rhythms.'

Ross Taylor shortlisted in the 2021 Sovereign Asian Art Prize

Ross Taylor has been selected as a finalist in the 2021 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, Asia's most prestigious prize for contemporary artists. 

Taylor's Ember, 2021 a landscape of Central Victoria, is painted from different viewpoints, capturing the forces that have shaped it through time and the way in which our memories are formed.

Ross Taylor at the AGA Khan Centre

Ross Taylor is included in Making Paradise at the AGA Khan Centre, London.

This collaborative project invites us to explore concepts of Eden through Art and Islamic garden design. The exhibition includes the work of artists Farkhondeh Ahmadzadeh, Veeda Ahmed, Mohammad Barrangi, Jung Byun, Clare Celeste Boersch, Jethro Buck, Rachel Dein, Yasmin Hayat, Sharmina Haq, Zarah Hussain, Jane Lee McCracken, Karen Nicol, Olga Prinku, Geoff Sample, Shorsh Saleh, Soraya Syed and Ross Taylor.

The exhibition is on display until 30 September 2021.

The Bayside Art Prize is a $15,000 acquisitive prize awarded for a contemporary Australian painting. Julia Gorman selected as a finalist in the 2021 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize

Julia Gorman has been selected as a finalist in the 2021 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize.

The 2021 Geelong contemporary art prize is a signature event that assists with the development of the Gallery's collection while fostering Australian artists and contemporary painting practice in general.

The winner will be announced on 28 May 2021, with the exhibition on display until 22 August 2021.

Monica Rohan has been selected as a finalist in the Ravenswood Australian Women's Art Prize for her painting, Tug, 2021 (pictured).

Judith Wright in Vault

Judith Wright is featured in the current issue of Vault.

Wright is known for her severe, near minimalist paintings, drawings, videos and installations, and her ability to sustain dialogues between different media. Creating art that is original and compelling, Wright is drawn to themes such as the vulnerability and impermanence of life. Ross Taylor was recently interviewed on Contemporary Art Collectors. 

About his work, Taylor says: 'I reference a mixed bag of imagery, from childhood holiday spots, domestic scenes and the natural world, playfully interrogating notions of my own personal history and memory. From one work to the next, the composition is morphing, shifting, self-referencing and abstracting, all according to the process of remembering. I suppose my aim for the viewer is to draw upon the complexity of the image as a critical expression of recalling an experience.'

Emily Ferretti in Weaving Futures

Emily Ferretti was selected as one of 15 contemporary artists from around Australia for the Australian Tapestry Workshop's Weaving Futures project.

The paid professional development and research project encouraged artists to expand their practice through the creation of a tapestry design, with access to the ATW weaving studio. 

An exhibition of the Weaving Futures designs will be held at ATW in 2021.

Nicholas Harding at Manly Art Gallery and Museum

Nicholas Harding's original sketchbooks and larger drawings are on display at Manly Art Gallery and Museum in Nicholas Harding: The Theatre Sketchbooks until 14 February 2021.

Granted access to the rehearsal room to sketch the actors and creatives behind Waiting for Godot, Cyrano de Bergerac, The Present and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Harding also created lively portraits of actors out of character, including Hugo Weaving, Richard Roxburgh and Philip Quast. Harding has also drawn some of Australia’s most renowned theatre directors and production creatives. These artworks are now a vibrant legacy of the Sydney Theatre Company’s recent productions.⁠

Judith Wright in The National 2021

Judith Wright has been announced as one of 39 exhibiting artists, collectives and collaboratives for The National 2021: New Australian Art, a major collaborative venture between the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Carriageworks and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA).

Wright's work will be on display at the MCA, among works by artists considering diverse approaches to the environment, storytelling and intergenerational⁠ learning through their works.

Judith Wright's works have been incorporated in Graeme Murphy AO and Janet Vernon’s 7 Deadly Sins production with MADE (Mature Artists Dance Experience).

In an article on ABC News, Murphy says, 'Judith has evolved from works on paper, to this more sculptural work. It's such a privilege to work with these strange, dark things she does'.⁠

Paul Davies on The Design Files

Space Displaced, Paul Davies's new body of work, is on display online. Central to each painting is modern architecture; its practical design values are disrupted by a sense of infinite possibilities, as one building is repeated and flipped atop a multitude of layered backgrounds.

In a profile on The Design Files, Davies explains, ‘I am interested in the way the post-impressionists depicted landscape by separating colour in block forms because it allows the viewer to project onto these spaces rather than give away too much information. Rather than depicting a landscape as it is, I am interested in how these methods can reveal different ways of looking.’

An edition of Elliat Rich's Transformation of Weaver, 2020, series of mirrors has recently been acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).

Writing in the September/October 2020 edition of NGV Magazine, Ewan McEoin, NGV Hugh D. T. Williamson Senior Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture, describes the works as embodying 'Rich's distinct, nuanced approach to design', and notes that Rich's works 'consider the connections between traditional knowledge, science and the natural world'.

Paul Davies at Geelong Gallery

Paul Davies's photographic works, recently acquired by Geelong Gallery, are included in A Shining Light: Recent Acquisitions 2019–20. The exhibition is on display at Geelong Gallery until 21 February 2021. Davies produced the works during a residency awarded by the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture Arizona.

Guy Maestri selected as a finalist in the Wynne Prize 2020

Guy Maestri has been selected as a finalist in the Wynne Prize, awarded annually for 'the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of figure sculpture by Australian artists’.

About his shortlisted work, Maestri explains: 'There is an immense old sheep station in Wilcannia (north-western NSW) where I go to paint from time to time. In the homestead’s front-yard is a grand old cactus garden. All attempts at its upkeep were abandoned years ago and it is being reclaimed by its harsh surrounding landscape. It is somehow unsettling and represents an extraordinarily slow dance between man and nature. It gives me a sense of the persistent march of time, of our often-futile attempts at controlling our environment. It also inspired this painting – the first I have ever made from memory.'⁠

Nicholas Harding selected as a finalist in the Archibald Prize 2020

Nicholas Harding has been selected as a finalist in the Archibald Prize 2020 for his portrait of journalist, author and social commentator David Marr.

Harding says: ‘David has lived down the street since 1982, but I can’t remember when we met, most likely at a Rex Irwin Art Gallery exhibition opening. David’s work has interested me since his days writing for The National Times and The Bulletin. As a journalist, he fearlessly shines a light on the skeletons in Australia’s sociopolitical closet; his biographies and essays are insightful and elegantly crafted. He remains forever an optimist, with a love for people, food, wine and the arts. Known for his progressive opinions, he is at heart a traditionalist – a life philosophy we share. David first sat for me at his home in 2011, and sittings in my studio occurred occasionally in the years since. A number of portraits have been attempted, failed and destroyed. David has been a generous and patient sitter. This portrait was painted in my studio following “lockdown” meals together, using material gathered over the past nine years and memory.’⁠

Guy Maestri selected as a finalist in the Archibald Prize 2020

Guy Maestri has been selected as a finalist in the Archibald Prize 2020, awarded annually to the best portrait, 'preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia’.

About painting journalist and television presenter Jennifer Byrne, Maestri explains: 'As host of ABC’s The book club and Mastermind (and literally being unbeatable at Scrabble), she is most certainly one of Australia’s great people 'distinguished in letters'. I told her that if she sat for me, I would make a small and quiet painting of her and that she could have it when I finished. I told her to bring a book and that all she would have to do was to sit and read. She brought Julia Gillard’s new book Women and leadership and read aloud to me as I painted. One inspiring woman reading aloud the experiences of another. What a privilege.’⁠

Monica Rohan selected as a finalist in the Archibald Prize 2020

Monica Rohan has been selected as a finalist in the Archibald Prize 2020 with her portrait of artist Lucy Culliton.

About the work, Rohan says: ‘Lucy is a beloved Australian artist known for her paintings of the vibrant garden and animal sanctuary of her home, as well as its rugged surrounds. I wanted to paint Lucy’s portrait because I feel we share an interest in celebrating colours and patterns found in the everyday. As we walked through her beautiful garden, I had Lucy stand beneath a selection of her favourite flowering trees. I wanted my painting to represent the natural connection Lucy has to the landscape she’s nurtured at her home. While working on the portrait back in my small studio in Brisbane, bushfires raged down south, creating a strange juxtaposition between the lush haven of Lucy’s garden in early spring and the harsh reality playing out on the news.’⁠

Judith Wright in The Australian

Writing in The Australian, art critic Christopher Allen describes Judith Wright's installation in the Adelaide Biennial as 'impressive'. The installation is 'crowded with imaginative and idiosyncratic figures that evoke dreams and nightmares. What makes this so effective is the clever use of found objects like mannequins and store dummies, combined with deliberately artificial and non-illusionistic elements, like a tiger made of sheets of plywood'.

Julia Gorman's colourful, art-filled home and studio is featured on Apartment Therapy.

In her works, Gorman attempts to capture the intangible. She explains, 'My work is improvisational and provisional, and I never want it to look labored. I want it to be buoyant and bursting with life and movement'. This same effect can be seen in her home and studio.

Monica Rohan at Redland Art Gallery

Monica Rohan's Head up, shoulders back, 2016, is on display at Redland Art Gallery in an exhibition featuring works acquired between 2006 and 2018 as part of the Redland Art Awards.

Rohan is best known for her intriguing self-portraits, depicting figures engulfed in their vivid settings and surrounds. Blending realism and abstraction, her works explore human fragility and isolation.

The exhibition is on display until 2 August 2018.

Paul Davies collaboration with Maroon 5’s Jesse Carmichael

Paul Davies has collaborated with Maroon 5 keyboards and guitar player Jesse Carmichael on a 2 Minute Movies (2MM) film. In the collaboration, Davies paints one of his his signature acrylic portraits of a mid-century modern house surrounded by tall palms, an image derived from stencils cut from the artist's photos.

The collaboration is featured on Art and Object. In his interview with Jordan Riefe, Davies explains his interest in the idea of the loop and how it reflects on his painting practice . 'Every day you keep coming back and it still needs something.'

Judith Wright in the Adelaide Biennial (extended)

Vera Möller Video Interview on Art Collector

Vera Möller recently spoke to Art Collector's Louise Martin-Chew on Zoom about her work and the influence of 'entirely otherworldly and also incredibly beautiful and intricate' reef phases on her work, and the importance of paying attention to these natural phenomena.

Ross Taylor on ArtsHub

After witnessing the aftermath of bushfires in central Victoria, Ross Taylor created a visual diary journalling the landscape's recovery, on display in Field Notes at Bendigo Art Gallery.

In a feature on art as recovery during times of devastation and destruction on ArtsHub, Taylor explains his work as 'a means of describing the cycle of nature and the tensions that lie between life and death'. ⁠

Vera Möller at Shell Cove

Vera Möller is known for her colourful, coral-like forms of dreamt-up specimens that evoke the natural world. 

Working with UAP Company, Frasers Property and Shellharbour City Council, Möller created a site-specific artwork for the new Shell Cove development in New South Wales.

Her series of sculptures, The Dragonettes, 2020, lead visitors into the heart of the town centre.

Laura Jones at Glasshouse Regional Gallery

Laura Jones is known for her exploration of the floral still life genre and for her series investigating climate change impacts on the Great Barrier Reef. Her unique visual language is defined by poetic observations of the natural world.

Laura Jones's Arcadia, a solo exhibition of her signature vivid, colourful still lifes and spirited landscapes depicting sub-tropical flora, follows her 2019 residency at Glasshouse Regional Gallery.⁠

About Hardiman and Royce's work, Dimity Noble writes, 'Broken mobile phone LCD screens are arranged in sculptural forms and revived via intricately complex hand-made circuit boxes and boards to emit ambient and reflective qualities of light (and in one case, imagery) to mesmerising effect'.

Designwork 04 is on display until 28 March 2020 as part of Melbourne Design Week, an initiative of the Victorian Government in collaboration with the NGV.

Paul Davies in Art Collector

Paul Davies in Artist Profile

Andrew Frost's article about Paul Davies appears in Artist Profile ahead of his solo exhibition opening in February 2020 at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, The Golden Days.

The exhibition explores the connection between Los Angeles, California, and Hill End, New South Wales, through an exploration of landscape and both historical and contemporary notions of the gold rush. An example is 'the stands of Australian gum trees that were planted there during the gold rush decades in the middle decades of the nineteenth century, that were used at one time as timber for railway sleepers, and are now planted as wind breaks next to LA’s highways', Frost explains. 

The Golden Days opens on 7 February and is on display until 22 March 2020.

About her work, Ferretti says, 'There have always been themes that I have revisited and a sensibility that is distinct but it’s been important to keep pushing in new directions ... As I have gained a more confident technical ability over the years it’s given me a freedom to push the abstract qualities in the work ... I understand what I want to achieve with the work and have gotten more playful compositionally because of that.'

Vera Möller in The Age

Vera Möller is included in Water, an exhibition exploring the vital element which sustains all life on Earth, and the environmental and social challenges of today, opening at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in December 2019.

A preview of the exhibition in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald features Möller's Vestibulia, 2019, a 15-metre-long display of the artist's handsculpted organic forms.

Möller says, 'We are at a point where our reefs and sponge gardens are dying very quickly. I do try to show my audience where they should look. I can’t help but want to engage and develop empathy and to contribute to its protection. But you first have to get people to look.'

vestibulia will be on display alongside works by leading international and Australian artists, including Olafur Eliasson, Cai Guo-Qiang, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, and Judy Watson. Water is on display from 7 December until 21 March 2020.⁠

Mason Kimber at Galerie Allen

Mason Kimber's new performative sculptural installation will be on display at Galerie Allen as part of Tongue on tongue : nos salives dans ton oreille, a multi-site exhibition in Paris from 5 until 21 December 2019.

Continuing his interest into the memory of architecture, the work will be composed of plaster and resin-based fragments realised using the shopfront facades inside Passage du Prado, one of the oldest arcades in the capital. Through mould-making, the project aims to reconfigure the way that we engage with history by listening to local stories and translating them into sculptural forms.

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy at Federation Square

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy's Beautiful Geometries, After Gabriel, 2017, will be screened at Federation Square from 21 to 27 November 2019.

Inspired by the happiness and innocence depicted in American abstract painter Agnes Martin's film Gabriel, 1976, Smuts-Kennedy's film explores the connections between the language of geometric abstraction, the inspirations Martin so readily talked about, and the world as we encounter it.

The film was shot during her residency at the McCahon House in New Zealand, where she performed a healing for the Kauri trees using the November light, referred to by Colin McCahon as 'a miracle'.

Judith Wright in the Adelaide Review

Sightlines [5], 2019, by Judith Wright is featured on the cover of the Visual Arts section of the Adelaide Review, accompanying a feature on 30 years of the Adelaide Biennial at the Art Gallery of South Australia. 

Wright has been selected for the 2020 edition, titled Monster Theatres, curated by Leigh Robb, with works that make visible the monsters of today.

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy at Aotea Centre

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy's Hill End, 2009, will be projected onto the Aotea Centre in Auckland nightly from sunset until 11pm throughout November 2019.

The stop animation was shot by the artist on road trips around the NSW coal coast, historical mining towns and old growth forests in Australia, and explores ideas of obsolescence and extinction.

Nicholas Harding at Trinity College

Be Brutal: Nicholas Harding Portraits, an exhibition of portrait works in oil and gouache from the artist's own collection as well as works in the Trinity College collection, is now showing at Burke Gallery at Trinity College at the University of Melbourne.

The exhibition title comes from sage advice to 'Be brutal!' from Australian art icon John Olsen during his portrait sitting for Harding in 2017. Harding is renowned as one of Australia's most dynamic portrait artists and has been a finalist seventeen times in the Archibald Prize, winner of the prestigious award in 2001, as well as being a multiple-time finalist in the Sulman Prize and Wynne Prize. 

Be Brutal is on display until 19 December 2019.

Nicolette Johnson selected as the winner of The Design Files's Handcrafted Design Award

Nicolette Johnson has been selected as the inaugural winner of The Design Files’s Design Awards for her work, Dark tower, 2019, now showing at Heide Museum of Modern Art in An Idea Needing to Be Made.

The Handcrafted category, celebrating handcrafted functional, decorative or wearable designs, was judged by Louise Olsen of Dinosaur Designs, artist and jeweller Maree Clarke and Chloe Powell of Craft Victoria.

Judith Wright in the 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art

Judith Wright has been announced as a participating artist in the 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, titled Monster Theatres, curated by Leigh Robb.

Robb says, 'Monster Theatres proposes an arena of speculation, a circus of the unorthodox and the absurd, a shadow play between truth and fiction. The title is inspired by a group of provocative Australian artists. Their urgent works of art are warnings made manifest. These theatres are theirs.’

Monster Theatres opens on 29 February and is on display until 8 June 2020 at the Art Gallery of South Australia and partner venue Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

Judith Wright is included in Here We Are at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The exhibition features works in the collection by compelling women artists, including Judith Wright.

Paul Davies at Soho Warehouse

Paul Davies's Three Stories, 2019, has recently been installed on the rooftop of Soho Warehouse in LA. The 18-foot-long triptych is loosely based on the work of writer Joan Didion.

Davies says, ‘I tried to replicate the intersectionality of Los Angeles in my work, rather than paint one continuous picture. I wanted to create a flow of landscapes that present a different story each time'.

Ross Taylor on The Design Files

Ross Taylor was interviewed by The Design Files ahead of the opening of his solo exhibition, A Foreign Affair.

The exhibition includes over a dozen colourful, medium- and large-scale drawings that explore holidays as a social phenomenon. Taylor explains, ‘I am fascinated at the fine line between luxury and debauchery, and the rules that present themselves in between.’

Ross Taylor in Vault Art Magazine

Ross Taylor's solo exhibition is previewed online on Vault. The exhibition includes dozens of Taylor's drawings, with his signature pencil marks and fragmented spatial construction, exploring the leisure industry through image play.

Kent Wilson writes: 

'How the utopian ideals of his source material – cruise ships, airports, holiday parks, food courts – hover on the edge of imminent dystopian actuality stirs a set of guidelines for his drawings that allows him to push the work to a zone of oscillation and glitch. “The potential in the drawings lie in the problems that present themselves,” he says, “as the composition comes into fruition and how they are resolved or deliberately unresolved. The most successful works for me push the boundaries of difficult colour and spatial relationships.” His drawings revel in the immediacy of effect and yet supply a depth of value that rewards contemplation beyond impact.'

Taylor's solo exhibition, A Foreign Affair, is on display until 10 August 2019.

Judith Wright at the Museum of Contemporary Art

Wright explores ideas of remembrance and memorial involving people and objects is presented in her wall-based installation of painted wooden and gilded frames, The Ancestors, 2014, which act as windows on a spiritual realm of love and loss.

Mason Kimber in Floorr

Mason Kimber was recently interviewed by Simek Shropshire for online publication Floorr Magazine, ahead of his next solo exhibition opening in September 2019. 

Explaining his paintings and wall-based reliefs with collaged, fragmented elements, Kimber says, 'The beauty of a fragment is that it never contains a complete story. The viewer is invited to speculate on what's missing and fill in the gaps themselves.'

The exhibition examines the legacy and influence of much-loved Australian artist Margaret Olley. Olley was a charismatic character who exerted a lasting impact on many artists as a mentor and supporter, including longtime friend Cressida Campbell. The exhibition will profile a life that was immersed in art – Olley's own and that of those she supported.

Nicholas Harding at GOMA

Work by Nicholas Harding will be on display at GOMA in Brisbane as part of Margaret Olley: A Generous Life.

The exhibition is a celebration of Australian icon Margaret Olley, examining her legacy and showcasing her close personal relationship with artists such as Nicholas Harding. Harding painted many portraits of Olley, including for the 1998 Archibald Prize, for which he was officially commended. In 2001, Olley was the judge of the Dobell Prize for Drawing and selected Harding's drawing of Sydney's Central Railway Station, which was acquired for the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

The exhibition opens on 15 June and is on display until 13 October 2019.

Julia deVille has been selected as the winner for the Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Art for her work, As above, so below, 2018.

The $20,000 biannual acquisitive art prize was judged by artist Godwin Bradbeer; Charlotte Day, Director, Monash University Museum of Art; and Danny Lacy, Senior Curator, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery.

Nicolette Johnson in Brisbane Art Design

Nicolette Johnson's Flora Fatale series will be shown as part of BRISBANE ART DESIGN (BAD) in BAD@Mob, a major exhibition at the Museum of Brisbane from 10 May until 11 August 2019. 

The exhibition showcases some of the brightest Brisbane artists and designers, from locals who have established national and global careers to those who have made their homes elsewhere, but continue to be influenced by Brisbane. BAD@MoB features established and emerging artists working across a range of practices, including robotics, performance art, video, installation, ceramics, jewellery and painting.

Laura Jones in the Archibald Prize

Laura Jones has been shortlisted in the Archibald Prize for her painting, Nakkiah in her dressing room, 2019.

Laura Jones’s subject is award-winning writer and actor Nakkiah Lui  Lui is a Gamillaroi/Torres Strait Islander woman and a young leader in the Australian Aboriginal community. The sitting for this portrait was held in Nakkiah's dressing room at the Sydney Opera House between shows of How to Rule the World. Jones says, 'I was thinking about the painting and she was building up to a powerful performance.’

The exhibition of finalists' works is on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 11 May until 8 September 2019, and will be followed by a regional tour.

John Nicholson has been selected as a finalist in the Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award 2019 with his work Rapid reactor, 2019.

In its eleventh year, the Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award is a $10,000 acquisitve prize, and will be judged this year by Deakin Art Collection manager Leanne Willis, artist Louise Weaver and arts writer and curator Professor Ted Snell.

Vera Möller on The Design Files

Vera Möller's latest exhibition A Thousand Tides, now showing at Bunjil Place, was recently featured on The Design Files.

In this exhibition, Vera brings the brilliance of Western Port Bay’s biosphere to suburban Melbourne. 'The project was shaped to reflect on some of the scintillating surfaces and structures found in sponge gardens, and sea slugs. I was equally interested in the wonderful expanses of mangrove air roots and sea grasses', Vera tells TDF's Elle Murrell. For A Thousand Tides, Vera has created ‘fields of hundreds and hundreds of objects that contemplate those spaces’.

Paul Davies at Macquarie University Art Museum

Paul Davies is included in the exhibition On the Edge: Landscapes from the Collection, curated by Kate Hargraves.

Landscapes on the edge are not only what we see, but what is perceived to be present. The melding of the imagined, unimagined and real sparks curiosity, narrative and the lived experiences of being within a landscape. Landscapes are places to ponder, places to fear, places to be enthralled, to sense the sublime existing on the edge where the real and the imaginary become one.

On the Edge represents places we are compelled to inhabit but at the same time have a distancing effect. These landscape spaces confirm our existence within the natural world and within the broader sphere of what is known to exist, as well as the unknown. The exhibition also includes works by Shay Docking, Geoff Dyer, Neil Frazer, Nathalie Hartog-Gautier, Marea Gazzard, Gertie Huddleston, Alan Jones, Ildiko Kovacs, Mandy Martin, Euan Macleod, Alexander McKenzie, Ginger Riley Munduwalwala, Sally Ross, A.J. Taylor and Craig Waddell.

The exhibition runs from 29 March until 26 April 2019 at Macquarie University Art Gallery.

Emily Ferretti at Bus Projects

Emily Ferretti's solo exhibition Drawn Together opens at Bus Projects on 10 April and runs until 4 May 2019.

In this exhibition, Ferretti shows a range of new drawings taken from her ongoing sketch books as well as works on large rugged fabric. The show highlights the role of drawing in her primary painting practice. Ferretti makes drawings as a way to gain understanding of her work through ideas and motifs that re-emerge over time. Usually a more private part of her practice, she exposes her methodology to an audience by putting works usually reserved for the studio or the sketch book in the gallery context. Works in Drawn Together derive equally from collected images, memory and the imagination hovering between representation and abstraction. Often a landscape scene, or still life form, became a departure point to explore the infinite possibilities of colour, composition and mood. Attuned to contemporary practice, Ferretti’s drawings engage with the history of picture making across genres and traditions.

Judith Wright at UQ Art Museum

Works by Judith Wright are now showing at UQ Art Museum in Second Sight: Witchcraft, Ritual, Power until 29 June 2019.

Among Wright's works is Tree of Life, 2019, whose hanging fruit symbolise male genitalia. The curators explain, 'From the end of the thirteenth century to the early sixteenth century, artistic depictions of the phallus tree in relation to witch folklore were prevalent. Wright is acutely aware of the humour and trauma connected to folklore imagery of the "phallus tree".'

Dale Hardiman for Designwork 03 in The Age

For Designwork 03: The Supply Chain, Dale Hardiman constructed furniture made from construction waste. Art and design writer Ray Edgar explores Hardiman's 'rough-and-ready approach' to furniture design and his use of common resources, a handsaw and a hammer, in The Age.

'Construction has one of the biggest percentages of waste globally', Hardiman says. 'Why do we finish a house, throw away everything and then ship in the furniture from Europe? Why not make the furniture from the material that makes the building? Building waste is perfectly sized for smaller objects.'

In an article that explores the ways in which designers are tackling climate change, Ray Edgar writes, 'understanding where materials come from and where they finish up is imperative'. 

Edgar highlights works by Blake Griffiths. For Designwork 03: The Supply Chain, Griffiths critiques the darker sources of materials of design. In his wreath made of tanned bony bream from the third Menindee fish kill, Griffiths memorialises the recent Darling River eco-disaster. Keulemans describes the wreath as 'darkly and critically reflective of capitalist capacities to exploit disaster'. ⁣

In 'An Insider's Guide to Melbourne Design Week' published on Broadsheet, NGV Senior Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture Ewan McEoin selects Designwork 03: The Supply Chain as a personal favourite highlight of the program.

In this exhibition, curated by designer and researcher Guy Keulemans, whose own 'post-industry' work has been collected by the NGV, designers consider waste as a resource and reimagine our relationship with material culture. McEoin describes the exhibition as 'very provocative, and possibly a very important show'.

Nicolette Johnson at the NGV

Nicolette Johnson's Black studded vase, 2018, is currently on display at the National Gallery of Victoria in Designing Women. Designing Women highlights the ongoing role of female designers as a dynamic and critical force in shaping contemporary design culture. The exhibition draws from the NGV Collection to showcase over 50 significant works of design – across diverse creative fields – all united by their female authorship.

Black studded vase was first exhibited in Artefacts, curated by Guy Keulemans, as part of the 2018 Melbourne Design Week exhibition program. The work is part of an ongoing exploration of forms inspired by multiple converging themes, including symmetry in the natural world, historical pottery, and the shapes and patterns found in ancient armours. Protrusions added to the work reference organic matter like spines on cacti, radiating flower petals, and insect antennae. They also borrow from surface decorations found on ancient vessels and garments, such as the decorative spikes on Minoan ritual jugs and the repeating grid patterns of East Asian armour. 

Designing Women runs until 29 September 2019.

Tarryn Gill at the Art Gallery of South Australia

Tarryn Gill's Guardians opens at the Art Gallery of South Australia in March 2019. Acquired after the 2016 Adelaide Biennial, Guardians was created after Gill's residency at the Freud Museum in London.

Gill's Guardians is a series of sound-emitting soft sculptures inspired by the studio of psychoanalyst Anna Freud, who would knit or weave at the loom while analysing her patients. Guardians also pays tribute to Gill’s family, specifically her seamstress mother and tailor grandmother.

Internationally recognised as a breeding ground for emerging artistic talent, the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) has created VCA Access to allow more people to gain a behind-the-scenes look at the contemporary workings of the institution. VCA Access connects a select group of Melbourne art lovers with high potential VCA Fine Arts Masters students, prominent VCA alumni artists and their representing galleries.

Nicholas Harding in Destination Sydney

Nicholas Harding is included in Destination Sydney: Re-Imagined. The second exhibition in the series, Destination Sydney is a collaborative project across three Sydney public galleries presenting the work of nine eminent artists to celebrate the important influence of Sydney as subject and theme. 

Harding's work is showing alongside the work of Jeffrey Smart and Wendy Sharpe at the National Trust's S.H. Ervin Gallery.

Camille Hannah awarded Bundanon Residency

Camille Hannah has been awarded a Bundanon Trust Residency, beginning in February 2019. Located on the south coast of NSW, Bundanon is home to Australia’s largest artist residency program. Bundanon is also the site of Australian artist Arthur Boyd's former home and studio.

Huseyin Sami at Artbank

Huseyin Sami is included in A Vacant Space, an upcoming exhibition at Artbank in Sydney. 

Ccurated by Eleanor Scicchitano, the exhibition considers how artists have long used movements, actions and gestures to bend time and space, and to highlight the way in which bodies relate to the environment around them. We are told that actions speak louder than words, but what about that moment before an action, or the time that immediately follows? An outcome of Artbank’s emerging curators program, A Vacant Space explores how actions are captured by artists, and how they use these moments to question our place in the world.

The exhibition also features artists Ian W. Abdulla, Kim Buck, Janet Burchill and Jennifer McCamley, Olive Cotton, Bridget and Alison Currie, Cherine Fahd, Rebecca Ann Hobbs, Kate Mitchell, Nicole Monks, Clare Rae, Kiron Robinson, Simone Slee, Prue Stent and Honey Long, Salote Tawale and Hossein Valamanesh.

Nicholas Harding in Art Collector

Nicholas Harding's upcoming solo exhibition at the gallery is previewed in the current issue of Art Collector. Titled New Paintings, the exhibition includes works produced after Harding returned to the Flinders Ranges to gather images for new work, only to find the vegetation charred by bushfires. During this trip, Harding also discovered a cancerous lump in his neck. 

Describing the exhibition, Kirsty Sier writes:

New Paintings speaks allegorically through landscapes of mortality and regeneration. The burnt landscape, with its green shoots persisting through the blackness, directly acknowledge Harding's illness and subsequent recovery.

Paul Davies at Soho House DTLA Warehouse

Paul Davies has been commissioned to create a mural – a 5-by-2-metre acrylic on canvas triptych – for the rooptop bar at the new Soho House DTLA Warehouse, opening in 2019. 

About the mural, Davies says: 

The idea is to look at Los Angeles through a lens – sunset colors, deep blue and orange, tying it to films like Mad Max and O Brother, Where Art Thou? where there's a really high contrast between orange and teal. The specific house, I'm not sure. It's an idea, a hope, a vision of the future. To me, the most important element of those homes is what the future holds. It's a Utopian idea. It's what I want to come through in the painting.

John Nicholson selected as a finalist in the Fisher Ghost Art Award

John Nicholson has been selected as a finalist in the Fisher Ghost Art Award for his work Boxes for bubbles, 2018 (pictured).

Campbelltown Art Centre's Fisher Ghost Art Award is a $20,000 acquisitive prize. The prize coincides with Campbelltown’s annual Festival of Fisher’s Ghost. Held over 10 days, the Festival dates back to 1956 and celebrates Australia’s most famous ghost – Frederick Fisher.

The exhibition opens on 27 October and runs until 13 December 2018, with the official opening and award announcement on 2 November 2018.

Elliat Rich in Vogue Living

Elliat Rich is included in the November/December 2018 issue of Vogue Living in a Vogue Loves feature.

Standing mirror, 2018 (pictured), was photographed at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne by Sharyn Cairns and styled by Joseph Gardner. Part of Rich'sOther Places series, the work was first exhibited at the gallery for Designwork02, presented as part of the NGV's 2018 Melbourne Design Week. 

Standing mirror is a musing on Rich's observations of the 'distinct haze of the distant ranges ... that shifts from morning to dusk, from north to south'. As the mirrors the light, the colours blend, reflect, emerge. 'They are part illusion; a solid gas, the shadow of a mountain, part thing; a space for reflection', Rich explains.

Emily Ferretti collaboration with Negative Press

Emily Ferretti's solo exhibition Shifting Landscapes is opens at Negative Press on 17 November 2018 from 1pm until 3pm.

Ferretti's collaboration with Negative Press showcases her foray into the process of monotype. Starting with a single motif, she has created a series of 36 unique works on paper.

Fiona McMonagle has been selected as a finalist in Splash: McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award for her work, The park at the end of my road, 2015-6 (still pictured), an animation created from her paintings.

Selina Ou on ABC's 7.30

Selina Ou has been selected as an artist in the National Portrait Gallery's 20/20 exhibition, which celebrates 20 years of the National Portrait Gallery with 20 new portrait commissions. Selina was commissioned to produce a portrait of quantum physicist Michelle Simmons.

Sam Cranstoun at the Museum of Brisbane

In the Museum of Brisbane and QPAC exhibition Impossible Conversations, Brisbane artist Sam Cranstoun interprets conversations between nine contemporary Australians living in Brisbane with celebrated figures in Italian history in a new watercolour series. These works examine cultural identity across centuries and continents.

Sam Cranstoun is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice experiments with incomplete, unusual and ambiguous ways of viewing and participating in history. His paintings prompt us to notice how imagery drawn from visual systems such as pop culture, art history and the natural environment inform our sense of the world.

Julia deVille on Broadsheet

Broadsheet's Will Cox recently visited Julia deVille at her Collingwood studio. Describing deVille's practice, Cox writes, 'deVille works with death every day, suspending it into moments of beauty'. Although she is best known for her taxidermy works, deVille has also begun to explore new technologies, including holograms. Elliat Rich in The Age

Elliat Rich is ‘producing some of the most authentic and original limited edition furniture in Australia’, according to NGV design curator Simon LeAmon. Ahead of her inclusion in the upcoming Designing Women exhibition at the NGV, Alice Springs-based Rich has been singled out as a leader in design, ‘charting an international practice from a very remote part of Australia’. Read the full exhibition preview published in The Age.

Elliat Rich at the National Gallery of Victoria

Elliat Rich's Weaver, 2018 (pictured) is included in Designing Women at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). Spanning nearly 40 years, from 1980 to 2018, the exhibition highlights the ongoing role of female designers as a dynamic and critical force in shaping contemporary design culture. The exhibition includes over 50 significant works of design from the NGV's collection.

Design writer Nicholas Carolan describes Weaver as a cylindrical shelf suspended from the ceiling that is sheathed in a curtain of turquoise synthetic fibre. Its 'magnetic qualities' are 'near irresistable' and 'amplified by the practical utility of the piece and its alien allure is heightened by the familiarity of the gesture that inspired it – the hair of curtain begging to be pulled back and tucked behind a metallic ‘ear’.'

Paul Davies acquired by Soho House

Six of Paul Davies' photograms have been acquired for the Soho House collection at Barcelona Beach. The photograms were created during Davies' recent NG Creative Residency in Provence, France. Davies' photograms (through their titles and compositions) reference one of the oldest surviving photographs: Nicephore Niepce's View from the Window at Le Gras, c. 1826.

Tarryn Gill at Angus-Hughes Gallery in London

Sculptures by Tarryn Gill from her Dearly Beloved series are included in Garden of Skin at Angus-Hughes Gallery in London. 

In these works, Gill references her continuing preoccupation with symbolic objects and mythical characters. According to writer Ted Snell, Gill's 'self-reflexive interrogations into the rituals we construct around life and death combine personal memories with characters drawn from mythology and funerary art to activate the space between the earthly and other-worldly, where we can re-examine, rethink and reimagine our identity.'

Linden New Art will present Wholeness and the Implicit Order, a major solo exhibition of new work by leading Australian mid-career artist Julia deVille in August. The renowned jeweller and taxidermist will explore the world of holography and VR in her first solo exhibition since 2014.


For Wholeness and the Implicit Order, Julia will create an immersive environment using sound, smell and optical illusion, as she reimagines the original Victorian rooms of the gallery. Ross Taylor selected as a finalist in the Paul Guest Prize

Congratulations to Ross Taylor who has been selected as a finalist in the Paul Guest Prize for his work, Carnival cruise, 2018 (pictured). 

Held biennially at Bendigo Art Gallery, the Paul Guest Prize is a $15,000 non-acquisitive prize for contemporary drawing. Judith Wright at QAGOMA

In the Garden of Good and Evil is Judith's most recent installation in an ongoing project to construct the imagined life of a lost child. In the Garden of Good and Evil continues her meditation on vulnerability, love and loss, a journey which began in 2003.

Fiona McMonagle selected as a finalist in the Ravenswood Art Prize

Fiona McMonagle has been selected as a finalist in the Ravenswood Australian Women's Art Prize for her painting, Competition, 2018 (pictured).

The prize was launched in 2017 to advance art and opportunity for emerging and established female artists in Australia, with the $35,000 prize the richest professional art prize for women in Australia.

The winner will be announced on 15 June, with the exhibition running until 24 June at Ravenswood School for Girls in Sydney.

Nicholas Harding selected as finalist in the Archibald Prize

Nicholas Harding has been shortlisted for the Archibald Prize with his painting Treatment, Day 49 (sorbolene soak), 2018, oil on linen, 61 x 51 cm (pictured). The self-portrait is based on a drawing from Harding's visual journal, which he kept during his recent cancer treatment.

Monica Rohan at Tweed Regional Gallery

A painter’s house at the Tweed Regional Gallery’s Margaret Olley Art Centre showcases work by Olley alongside responses to her re-created studio by contemporary painters including Monica Rohan as well as Guy Maestri, John Honeywill and Lewis Miller.

Judith Wright is included in Other People Think: Auckland's Contemporary International Collection at Auckland Art Gallery.

The exhibition reflects a turn towards the Asia Pacific region, including South America, which respects the changing demographics of New Zealand’s largest and most diverse city. Huseyin Sami has been selected as a finalist in the Gold Award. 

The Gold Award was established following a substantial bequest from the estate of Moya Gold for the aquisition of Australian paintings. Designed as an invitation-only award to acquire contemporary Australian art, the biennial prize awards a cash prize of $50,000, with the winning work(s) acquired by Rockhampton Art Gallery.

In 2018 The Gold Award will by guest judged by Simon Elliott, Deputy Director Collection and Exhibitions, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art. The exhibition will run from 18 August until 7 October 2018.

Huseyin Sami is included in Equal Area: Lee Kun-Yong at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art.

Equal Area presents the work of Lee Kun-Yong, one of Korea’s most seminal conceptual artists, charting the development of his visual and theoretical methodology that has expanded possibilities for performance art since the 1970s. As part of the exhibition, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art brings Lee Kun-Yong’s practice into dialogue with contemporary Australian artists Huseyin Sami, Daniel Von Sturmer and Emily Parsons-Lord. Paul Davies in Vogue

Paul Davies is featured in the November issue of Australian Vogue, explaining the genesis of his series of artworks linking 19th-century gold rushes in California and Australia with modern-day Los Angeles.

Inspired by the Frank Lloyd Wright quote 'everything loose will land in Los Angeles', Davies' exploration of the connection between LA and Australia takes form through a series of collages and paintings. He explains, 'the native Australian gum trees scattered throughout Los Angeles remind me of the gold rush link between both places and how, in a way, this is happening today, as many Australians are drawn to Hollywood.'

Elliat Rich at the National Gallery of Victoria

Elliat Rich's Anerle-aneme chairs are now showing at the NGV in The Pool.

Originally commissioned for the Australian pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016, the chairs are handmade from strips of spray-painted black, ochre and blue steel by a team of seven Indigenous craftspeople from the Centre for Appropriate Technology. Anerle-aneme means 'sit a little while' in the Arrernte language of central Australia.

Julia Gorman at Caves

Julia Gorman is now showing at Caves in Princesse de Broglie with Rob McHaffie and Noriko Nakamura. The exhibition is an homage to Ingres by three artists finding three different inspirations in the 1853 Ingres painting, Princesse de Broglie, held in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Jenepher Duncan's reflections on Philip Hunter

Philip Hunter, an alumnus of and former painting teacher at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) passed away in April this year, aged 58. His passing has been marked in a memorial piece by curator Jenepher Duncan, with an introduction by Jon Cattapan, as part of ART150, celebrating 150 years of the VCA.

Martin Smith at SASA Gallery

Martin Smith is included in Parallels of Lattitude at the University of South Australia's SASA Gallery, opening on 28 September 2017.

Parallels of Latitude is a group exhibition of six photographic artists, half from Queensland and half from South Australia. Paul Davies wins Chippendale World Art Residency

Congratulations to Paul Davies, who has been announced as one of the three winners of the 2017 Chippendale World Art Residency for a painting of a landscape that inspires a sense of place. As part of the prize, Davies has been awarded a six-week artist residency in the culturally rich and colourfully inspiring region of Provence and surrounds in Southern France.

About his winning painting, Everything loose will land in LA/Double Golden Gully, 2017, Davies explains, 'the native Australian gum trees scattered throughout Los Angeles remind me of the gold rush link between both places and how, in a way, this is happening today, as many Australians are drawn to Hollywood. Australia's gold rush began after Edward Hargraves noticed the landscapes producing gold in California were also in Australia.'

Julia deVille awarded 2017 Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship

Congratulations to Julia deVille, who has been announced as one of the 2017 Sidney Myer Creative Fellows, receiving an unrestricted grant of $160,000 over a two-year period.

The Sidney Myer Creative Fellowships recognise talent and exceptional courage in mid-career artists. Rather than being tied to specific outcomes, the fellowships provide an income over two years, allowing each fellow time for creative reflection in which to develop aspects their practice without financial pressure.

Nicholas Harding at the National Portrait Gallery

A solo exhibition of portraits by Nicholas Harding opens at the National Portrait Gallery on 1 September 2017. A previous winner of the Archibald Prize (2001) for his portrait of John Bell as King Lear, Harding is well regarded for both his charcoal and ink drawings and his thickly painted oil and watercolour paintings.

Nicholas Harding: 28 Portraits features Hardings paintings of Robert Drewe, John Bell and Hugo Weaving, each part of the National Portrait Gallery's permanent collection, alongside portraits borrowed from private collections and the artist's studio.

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy's For the Love of Bees

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy has developed For the Love of Bees, a living social sculpture and collaboration that imagines Auckland as the safest city in the world for bees. 

As part of the project, colonies of 5000 bees will be introduced to Victoria and Myers Parks for about two years. Working in collaboration with Auckland Council Parks and Activate Auckland, For the Love of Bees creates an ecosystem that supports thriving bee colonies by introducing hives and focusing on the quality and quantity of flowers throughout the city.

Paul Davies acquired by the Crocker Art Museum

Paul Davies' series of three paintings, Everything Loose Will Land in LA/Double Golden Gully, 2017 (pictured), has been acquired by the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, USA. The work is based on the relationship between Australia and California, from the gold rush period of the 1840s and '50s to the modern-day attraction to Hollywood and Silicon Valley. It was recently shown at Rudolph Schindler's modernist Fitzpatrick-Leland House, presented by This By That and the MAK Center for Art and Architecture.

Julia deVille at the Johnston Collection

Julia deVille is included in the upcoming exhibition, Animal Kingdom, at the Johnston Collection. In Animal Kingdom, animal-inspired objects from the Johnston Collection are juxtaposed alongside works by some of Melbourne's best contemporary makers. Adam Pyett at Geelong Gallery

Adam Pyett's solo survey exhibition, Still life painting, is now showing at Geelong Gallery until 16 July 2017. Curated by Lisa Sullivan, the survey exhibition includes works spanning over ten years of Pyett's career and charts his longstanding interest in the still life genre.

Mining traditional subjects from leaves and flowers, transparent vessels, and skulls through to those that reflect popular culture such as drink cans and rock t-shirts, still life is the genre through which Pyett explores his primary interest, the subject of painting itself.

Vale Philip Hunter

It is with great sadness that the gallery announces the recent death of Philip Hunter. Born in 1958 in Donald in the Wimmera region of north west Victoria, Philip explored and defined a contemporary and unique view of the Australian landscape. His interests across a broad range of subjects, including architecture, music, philosophy, literature, geology and ecology continually fed his appetite for drawing and painting his natural surroundings and just how we might conceptualise those ideas. His work is held in many prominent public, private and corporate collections. Philip was an inspiring friend, teacher and colleague to many and will be greatly missed. Photo by Julian Kingma.

Julia Gorman in Vivid Sydney

As part of Vivid Sydney, Julia Gorman – in collaboration with Paris-based production company Danny Rose – will create a constantly evolving projection cast onto the heritage-listed façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA). The projection will be developed specifically for Vivid Sydney and draws inspiration from the natural world and images originally made by the artist in watercolour, oils and marker pen.

Vivid Sydney is the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas. The festival will run from 26 May until 17 June 2017.

Designwork 01 featured on Broadsheet

Designwork 01, the inaugural exhibition in an ongoing series dedicated to presenting the best contemporary Australian design, has been featured on Broadsheet Melbourne. The exhibition brings design into the context of a commercial gallery, offering design to collectors, a practice that Ewan McEoin, senior curator in the NGV’s Department of Contemporary Design and Architecture, notes is not yet common practice in Australia.

Presented as part of the NGV's Melbourne Design Week, the exhibition features acclaimed designers from different fields, including furniture designers Ash Allen and Dale Hardiman, jeweller Kyoko Hashimoto and ceramicist Lucile Sciallano.

Designwork 01 in AFR

Designwork 01 is previewed by Stephen Todd in today's Australian Financial Review. Presented as part of the NGV's Melbourne Design Week, the exhibition is the inaugural in a series dedicated to showing the best contemporary Australian design. Todd writes: 'Perhaps the most important show is Designwork 01 at Sophie Gannon Gallery. Important, because it's the first show of contemporary Australian design in an art gallery context since Roslyn Oxley made the unprecedented step of showing Marc Newson's Lockheed lounge and commode in her Paddington gallery in 1986.' Newson's Lockheed lounge recently sold at auction in London in 2015 for 44.7 million.

Huseyin Sami performance at Artspace

As part of Artspace's Superposition of Three Types exhibition, Huseyin Sami will perform a Painting Performance (with Improvised Brush) on Wednesday 15 March 2017. 

Sami playfully engages with the history of art and especially painting as the domain of the lone, genius artist working on a singular masterpiece. His performance transports the actions of making art into the social space of the gallery and his use of DIY, quasi-mechanical processes raises questions around the visible mark of the artist. In Sami’s practice, paint is not a material to be conquered and finessed, but rather is given its own agency to spread and congeal as desired.

DESIGNWORK 01

Presented as part of the NGV's Melbourne Design Week, Designwork 01 at Sophie Gannon Gallery will be the first exhibition in an ongoing series dedicated to presenting the best contemporary Australian design.

 Designwork 01 will feature the best designers practicing in Australia, many of whom contribute to the design field on a global scale, designing commercial products for major design firms including Cappelini and Mooi. These designers practice through an inquiry or set of ideas, much like artists.

The practice of showing contemporary design in a commercial gallery is well established, but hasn’t happened in Australia. Designwork 01 will push Australian design into new areas, in particular, the commercial gallery environment.

Judith Wright's book, In the Garden of Good and Evil

Judith Wright's book, In the Garden of Good and Evil, has recently been published in an edition of 500 by Piper Press.

In the Garden of Good and Evil is the most recent installation in an ongoing project to construct the imagined life of a lost child. The Garden continues Wright's meditation on vulnerability, love and loss. Though the works are infused with a sense of melancholy, there is often an element of the sanguine.

Congratulations to Sam Cranstoun, who has been awarded a Highly Commended prize at the Bermingham Prize for his artwork 'Holiday, Oh Holiday', 2016, a watercolour work that uses water from the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial at Hyde Park in London.

The Elain Bermingham National Watercolour Prize in Landscape Painting is a unique triennial art prize that aims to celebrate excellence and innovation in the watercolour medium.

The exhibition is held at the Webb Gallery at Griffith University's Queensland College of Art in Brisbane, and runs until 25 February 2017.

The $30,000 acquisitive award has gained a reputation as one of the most prestigious and generous awards for Western Australian contemporary artists. Julia Gorman commission at the MCA

Julia Gorman's The Forties, 2016 is currently on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. The museum's former Maritime Services Boardroom has been reinvigroated by Gorman's new artist commission for the first time in 25 years. Tarryn Gill in BankWest Acquisitive Art Prize

Tarryn Gill has been selected as a finalist in the Bankwest Acquisitive Prize with her work, Guardian Totem (with Toad), 2016 (pictured).

The work is part of Gill's Guardian series, which began following her residency at the Freud Museum in London. After being privy to the collection of antiquities in Freud's study, she was inspired to create soft sculptures that appear like seers or prophets. The series also draws inspiration from Japanese tomb ornaments (Haniwa), which are arranged to protect the dead and drive away evil. The works are self-reflexive interrogations in to rituals relating to life and death.

The exhibition opens on 23 November 2016 at Bankwest Art Gallery, Bankwest Place, 300 Murray Street, Perth.

Paul Davies' album artwork for Julien Barbagallo of Tame Impala

Paul Davies has recently collaborated with his friend, Tame Impala drummer Julien Barbagallo, for the cover artwork for Barbagallo's upcoming solo album, Grand Chien. The album will be released on vinyl on 28 October 2016.

Grand Chien was written and recorded solo (Barbagallo plays all of the instruments) in Melbourne and in hotel rooms around the world. The album artwork collaboration was sparked after Barbagallo's visit to Davies’ LA studio while he was in town to headline the Coachella festival with Tame Impala. The portrait is a first for Davies, who is known for his paintings of mid-century architecture and hyper-coloured landscapes.

Now representing Tarryn Gill

Sophie Gannon Gallery is pleased to announce representation of Tarryn Gill.

Tarryn Gill is a Western Australia-based multidisciplinary artist working across the mediums of photography, sculpture, installation, film, drawing and performance. Over the last 15 years, her practice has moved rhizomatically outwards from visual art through film, theatre, choreography, costume and set design. 

Following her residency at the Freud Museum in London in 2013, Gill has produced works that are a result of being privy to Freud's personal collection of Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Asian antiquities and the studio of his daughter and fellow analyst, Anna Freud. Gill's sculptures are reminiscent of characters found in folktales, pop culture, myths and legends, and many of her works appear like prophets, like the objects in Freud's possession.  

According to writer Ted Snell, Gill's 'self-reflexive interrogations into the rituals we construct around life and death combine personal memories with characters drawn from mythology and funerary art to activate the space between the earthly and other-worldly, where we can re-examine, rethink and reimagine our identity'.

Artist workshop with Sam Cranstoun

Join Brisbane artist Sam Cranstoun this Saturday 3 September 2016 for a hands-on workshop using vintage and found photographic images as the foundation for collage-based artworks.

Cranstoun works in a variety of mediums – including collage, sculpture, watercolour and video – focusing on historical figures, events and images as a way of exploring how history is shaped and how we respond. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and his work is held in various public collections including University of Queensland Art Museum and Queensland University of Technology Art Museum. Cranstoun has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize and the Churchie Prize, and will have his first solo exhibition at Sophie Gannon Gallery in June 2017.

Fiona McMonagle in the Basil Sellers Prize

Fiona McMonagle has been shortlisted for the Basil Sellers Art Prize 2016, which encourages contemporary artists to engage with the many themes within sport and to contribute to a critical reflection on all forms of sport and sporting culture in Australia. 

Working predominantly with watercolour, McMonagle makes work that pays tribute to the disaffected and the working class. Her portraits often convey a sense of melancholy and nostalgia, with a unique directness that makes for a compelling encounter between subject and viewer. Her Basil Sellers work, The Huddle, 2016 (pictured) – a work which includes audio and sculpture – takes women’s soccer as its subject.

In 2014, McMonagle won the People's Choice Award for The Ring, 2014, her installation of three large-scale watercolour portraits and an animation video.

Julia deVille wins Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize

Julia deVille has been awarded the 2016 Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize for her work, Neapolitan Bonbonaparte, 2013 (pictured).

Her winning work features taxidermied chicks, whose feathers have been dyed in the colours of Neapolitan ice cream, in an antique silver ladel. The work refers to the undisclosed use of cage eggs in the production of foods such as ice cream. deVille says that the work is a comment on industrialised animal agriculture, one of the biggest causes of environmental devastation. 

The $30,000 Waterhouse Prize celebrates artists who demonstrate the link between art, science and the natural world in their work. deVille's prize-winning work is on veiw at the South Australian Museum from 10 June until 31 July 2016. For further information, please click here.

Michael Muir's painting Orleans Stomp, 2016 (pictured) will be auctioned for the 2016 Art of Music charity auction at the Art Gallery of New South Wales on Saturday 18 June 2016.

Presented by musician Jenny Morris, Art of Music combines the worlds of art and music and sees artists create unique original works inspired by iconic Australasian songs. All works are auctioned at a gala dinner with proceeds going to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy, a charity that uses music in interactive therapy sessions to assist people with physical and psychological disabilities.

Muir created a work inspired by The Cruel Sea’s track Orleans Stomp for the auction.

Paul Davies highly commended in the Chippendale New World Art Prize

Congratulations to Paul Davies who has been highly commended in the Chippendale New World Art Prize for his series of photograms, developed during his artist residency at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture in Phoenix, Arizona.

Responding to the notion of 'organic architecture', Davies created a series of 24 photograms, one per day at various locations around of the property. Sunlight and moonlight are captured at different locations onto paper painted with gum bichromate, a photosensitive solution developed in the 1800s. Using a stencil cut from the photo of the exterior of the Frank Lloyd Wright building, the image was reduced to a silhouette, blending architecture and landscape.

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy at Rm Gallery

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy's Events within Boundaries is a site- and calendar-specific installation that materialised during a week-long informal studio residency that Smuts-Kennedy undertook at Rm during Matariki 2015.

It continues her enquiry into the potential for geometric form to function as site-specific tools for investigating the qualities of space. Smuts-Kennedy’s practice is focused on a research-based investigation into fields of energy as they engage with conceptual thinking, both within an art based language and other intuition-driven modes of enquiry.

Paul Davies in Chippendale New World Art Prize

Congratulations to Paul Davies who has been selected as a finalist in the Chippendale New World Art Prize. The winner of the prize will receive a $10,000 residency grant at the Art Studio Ginestrelle Retreat at Mount Subasio, Assisi, Italy.

Davies' entry will be on view as part of the finalists exhibition, opening on Thursday 2 June 2016.

Martin Smith at Caboolture Regional Gallery

Works by Martin Smith have been included in the exhibition, Love... More than a four letter word at Caboolture Regional Gallery. The exhibition features work by artists working across varying mediums and approaches, all exploring the concept of love in its many capacities. Featured artists include Tracey Moffatt, Joy Hester, Jenny Watson, Linde Ivimey, Angelic Mestiti, Clarke Beaumont and others.

Fiona McMonagle at LUMA

Do I Look Like I Care, a solo exhibition featuring works by Fiona McMonagle, has been curated by Dr Vincent Alessi at La Trobe University Museum of Art (LUMA). 

Over the last decade Fiona McMonagle has looked towards Melbourne's western suburbs for the subjects which populate her exquisitely and delicately executed watercolours. Generic without being stereotypical, honest without being patronizing, her work explores the trials and tribulations of teenagers and family life in sometime challenging environments. This exhibition brings together works from across the last decade investigating issues of loneliness and solitude, the navigation of teenage years, family and group dynamics and notions of being an outsider or misunderstood in a suburban world.

The exhibition opens on 4 May and runs until 8 July 2016.

Danie Mellor in Panorama forum at TarraWarra Museum of Art

Danie Mellor's work is included in the current exhibition, Panorama (in two parts), curated by Anthony Fitzpatrick and Victoria Lynn, at TarraWarra Museum of Art. The exhibition features works by Mellor and other artists who have redefined the way we see the landscape, including Fred Williams, John Olsen Sidney Nolan, Daniel Boyd, Stephen Bush, Judy Watson and Imants Tillers.

Part One is on view from 12 March until 15 May 2016. Part Two is on view from 19 May until 31 July 2016.

As part of the exhibition, Danie will join artists Imants Tillers and Judy Watson in speaking about their work in relation to the landscape in a public program at TarraWarra on Saturday 7 May 2016, from 2pm until 3.30pm. Poet, academic and author, Justin Clemens, will also recite new poems that he has written inspired by the exhibitions. The forum will be moderated by TarraWarra director Victoria Lynn.

Monica Rohan Finalist in 2016 Gold Award

Monica Rohan has been selected as a finalist for the Gold Award 2016 at Rockhampton Art Gallery. 

Established in 2012, the Gold Award honours the memory of Moya Gold, philanthropist and educator, who inspired and provided for this prize directly through a substantial bequest for the acquisition of Australian paintings.

The Gold Award is a national biennial event, presented at the Rockhampton Art Gallery, as a joint initiative of Rockhampton Art Gallery Trust and Rockhampton Regional Council. Designed as an invitation award to consider the best in contemporary painting while simultaneously building a substantive collection, the most outstanding work or works by an artist will be awarded the $50,000 cash prize.

The winning entry will be determined by guest judge, Chris Saines CNZM, Director, QAGOMA.

The Gold Award exhibition will run from 23 July until 4 September 2016.

Emily Ferretti exhibition at Schoolhouse Studios

NY COLLECT is a solo exhibition by painter Emily Ferretti and shows the outcome of her recent Greene Street studio residency in New York City. Based on Ferretti’s exploration into American folk art traditions, which was her focus while in America, the show incorporates elements of research and studio-based works made over the three-month residency period. It includes a large-scale wall installation, artefacts and drawings that show both the conceptual and tangible working methods of the artist's practice. 

NY COLLECT is a very personal insight into new subject matter that has ignited and influenced an important shift in Ferretti's work.

Paul Davies awarded the Taliesin Artist Residency

Congratulations to Paul Davies on being awarded the artist residency at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. Paul Davies will join students throughout February at Taliesin, the winter home of Frank Lloyd Wright. Davies’ work has been known to the Dean of the School, Aaron Betsky (formerly Director at Cincinnati Art Museum and Director of the Venice Biennale of Architecture), who made mention of his work last year in an essay featured in Architecture Review.

The Taliesin Artist Residency is based at Taliesin, Phoenix, Arizona. Frank Lloyd Wright established the Taliesin Fellowship in 1932, which was based on the idea of the allied arts fostered in a community of learners that could be an alternative to the traditional university. The program developed into Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. From its origins, Taliesin has served as a living, working, educational space, forming a creative and diverse community of professional architects, artists, faculty, students and staff.

Danie Mellor in the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at QAGOMA

See Danie Mellor's new multi panelled drawing Deep (forest), 2015 and the accompanying photographs New Materialisms (anticipating Girrugarr), 2015 at APT8, opening tonight at Queensland Art Gallery.

APT is the only exhibition series of the 160 biennials and triennials currently staged worldwide to focus on the contemporary art of Asia, Australia and the Pacific.

Sarah Smuts-Kennedy selected for McCahon House Residency

Congratualtions to Sarah Smuts-Kennedy who will be taking up a McCahon House Artists’ Residency in September 2016.

Parehuia, the purpose-built McCahon House Contemporary Artists' Residency and Studio, is located adjacent to Colin McCahon's former home and is amongst the most prestigious artists’ residencies in New Zealand. Three mid-career artists are selected and supported each year to research and develop new work in the house.
